50th Anniversary Painted Ponies

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market, the museum has partnered with The Trail of Painted Ponies and six renowned Indian artist to create exclusive, collector-quality 2-foot ponies. The ponies were generously donated by The Trail of Painted Ponies in memory of Gary Avery, creator of Native Peoples Magazine. All proceeds from the drawing tickets will benefit the Heard Museum Guild American Indian Art Endowment Fund.

About the Artists

Six well-known Indian artists-two individuals and two teams-were chosen to translate their artistic mastery onto the three-dimensional canvas of 2-foot ponies. Each has generously donated his or her time and talents to create exquisite,
one-of-a-kind works of art.
Pony In White Forest
Anita Fields
Black Horse Society
Terrance Guardipee and
Catherine Black Horse

"The introduction of the horse changed the course of history for many Native tribes," notes Osage ceramist Anita Fields, who uses white trees and golden leaves to symbolize the symbiotic relationship of man and nature found within Native American customs and cultures. She incorporates writing with embossed and stamped clay fragments to represent the spiritual and sacred belief systems associated with the horse in may Native Nations.

The Blackfeet called their horses "elk-dogs," and the animals were highly prized for trading in ceremonial transfers, hunting, raiding, war parties and moving camps. Blackfeet artists Terrance Guardipee and Catherine Black Horse have collaborated to incorporate the designs of the Black Horse Society on their Painted Ponies submission. Each marking represents specific symbols including stars, water, the Sun-Creator and a medicine symbol, all of which the
artists explain.
Spirit of the Seasons
Caroline Carpio

Known for her unique ceramic vessels, Isleta potter Caroline Carpio pays tribute to her son's Medicine Hat horse and "honors all horses for the resilience of their spirit with nature and for the splendor of their sacred connection with our ancestors and with all mankind. As a Pueblo Native and potter, the inspiration for the designs that I chose...are those that depict the natural forces the horse has to endure: the sun, moon, wind, rain and snow."

Hunting Rabbits
Terri Greeves and Dennis Esquivel

A husband and wife team, Terri Greeves, Kiowa, and Dennis Esquivel, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa, drew inspiration for their pony from their two sons. Recently given toy bows, the boys have been stalking through the juniper trees, hunting imaginary game and fighting imaginary foes, much as their great-grandfathers likely played as children. On the pony, they portray "two brothers riding bareback together - playing, practicing, and learning the skills of manhood ... a continuous line from the past through the present and into the future."

All of the original Masterwork Ponies from The Heard Museum Guild Trail of Painted Ponies Project will include a one-of-a-kind Certificate of Authenticity signed by the President of The Trail of Painted Ponies, Mr. Rod Barker. They also include a packet explaining the history of The Trail of Painted Ponies, a CD of professional images of the Masterwork Pony, interesting information on the artists who created the original Masterwork Pony, and the history of the Heard Museum.
