American Spirit
American Spirit

Pony Story: In 2010, The Trail of Painted Ponies hosted an exciting design competition for Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede. The winner was a talented artist named Alanna Donohue of Brentwood, New York, with her Pony titled "American Spirit." "I love Dolly," says this colorful graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. "She seems to be so warm and at home with the woman she is. I didn't want to let her down." Seventeen years in the home decorating field enhanced her design abilities and resourcefulness when it comes to working creatively with different materials. She knew where to go for the fabric and silver embellishments she incorporated into her design. With a touch that the woman who wrote and sang "Coat of Many Colors" would surely appreciate, Alanna fabricated the saddle from pieces of a shabby leather coat her mother had given her years ago. But Alanna wants to be sure not to take all the credit for her Painted Pony. She makes a point of sharing credit with her spiritual collaborator. "God gave me a gift that I haven't really used. And I have always wanted to somehow contribute to this world with my art. So I said to him, 'You're the Master Creator. Let's do this together.'" Of her achievement, Alanna says, "I wanted to create a special Painted Pony that people would want to take home with them from Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede. Something that would help them preserve that priceless memory forever. A Painted Pony people could ride in their dreams. That is 'American Spirit!'"

Festival of Champions
Festival of Champions

Pony Story: Once each year we create an exclusive Painted Pony for Dillard?s Department Stores to headline their wide selection of Painted Pony figurines. This year we chose a design by one of our celebrated Painted Pony artists, Janee Hughes, that honors the horses and riders who compete at the highest level of equestrian sports. There are six international competitions ? show jumping, eventing, combined driving, endurance riding, dressage and reining ? and each event is represented in graphic detail on the sides of the Pony, The best American riders and horses work hard to qualify for a position on international teams, and this Painted Pony is a fitting tribute. Created exclusively for Dillard's Stores in 2011. There are 250 Dillard?s Department Stores across the country that carry this Pony, along with other figurines. We encourage you to visit a Dillard?s near you. Some interesting background: The history of equestrian sports dates back 2,000 years, to when the Greeks held chariot races and introduced dressage training to prepare their horses for war. It continued to develop as a military exercise through the Middle Ages until, at the beginning of the 20th Century, it was included in the Olympian games. Today, the popularity of horse sports has gone far beyond its traditional military base. It is the only Olympic sport in which men and women compete against each other on equal terms. It is also the only one in which humans and animals compete together.

High Desert Horse Feathers
High Desert Horse Feathers

Pony Story: Native American influences have been a part of Kathy Morrow's life since childhood; she was raised on the San Carlos Apache and Pine Ridge Sioux Indian Reservations, where her father organized Indian police departments. Many of her paintings reflect Native American legends. With her design, the white plume of an Eagle feather stretches along each side of the Pony, forming the perfect background for a series of four painted horses that represent the rainbow of mankind - black man, yellow man, red man, and white man. The total effect is an image of harmony at its best. Created exclusively for the High Desert State Bank in 2004.

Kindred Spirits
Kindred Spirits

Pony Story: "Like many Native People, I have a deep love and respect for animals and what we can learn from them, says this self-taught artist from Loon Lake, Washington. Guided by this belief, she has imagined a Pony standing in a mountaintop meadow, surrounded by animal friends, each with a lesson to teach. The buffalo represents renewal. The Eagle sees the world with clarity. The bear stands for power. The wolf is a model for cooperation. The mouse, though small, was looked upon by traditional tribes as a pathfinder. "And the circle around the Pony's eye speaks to the improved vision that comes from using animal wisdom to improve our daily lives." Created exclusively for Dillard's Stores in 2008.

Maple Leaf Pony
Maple Leaf Pony

Pony Story: The Canadian Horse originated from horses sent to Quebec by King Louis XIV in the late 1600s. Adapting to extreme conditions and sparse feed, it evolved into a hardy easy-keeper that, according to lore, is capable of generating "more power per hundred pounds of body weight than horses of any other breed." Most commonly black in color, good-natured and truly versatile, it is a natural "canvas" for a horse that represents all of Canada. Covered with 14 maple leaves - signifying 10 provinces and 3 territories that are unified by a large maple leaf draped over its back - and running above a map of Canada, this exclusive Painted Pony was created by a Canadian artist who runs a small boarding and riding facility named Justa Lil Ranch in the far northern reaches of Alberta. Created exclusively for retailers in Canada in 2008.
