"War Pony," one of the most recognizable icons from The Trail of Painted Ponies graces the cover. Publishing History

It was in the fall of 2001 that The Trail of Painted Ponies first ventured into publishing with a hardback book that featured the life-size Painted Ponies created for The Trail of Painted Ponies, the Santa Fe, New Mexico-based philanthropic public art project. "Spirit War Pony" graced the cover, and an introduction was written by the Governor of New Mexico, followed by the story of The Trail. These stunning book contained images of almost 100 Painted Ponies and brief stories about the artists and their masterpieces.

In 2002 The Trail published a "Second Edition Updated with New Photos." The same cover was featured and a new softcover edition was added along with pictures of 25 new Painted Ponies. This was all before the first Painted Ponies figurines were introduced. With the first release of figurines in the winter of 2003 came a flood of requests from stores carrying Painted Ponies. The book put the figurines in context. Seeing photos of these collectibles on the pages of a best-selling book confirmed that  the figurines were miniature works of art. Then, the Third Edition, featuring "Thunderbird Suite" on the cover was published and it included a new Introduction, and even more Painted Ponies.

In 2004 The Trail published  both a hardcover and softcover Collectors Edition. "CowPony," "When We Were As One" and "Route 66 Pony" looked out from the cover. The book was simplified, leaving room for more pictures of Painted Ponies. A new section was added, showcasing  Artists at Work on their Painted Ponies. An important Facts and Figurines section was added that included Story Tags of all the figurines that had been crafted to date.  This, in effect, turned the book into a glorious collector’s catalog.

For two years the Collectors Edition was a popular title, so much so that in 2006 The Trail published an Updated Collectors Edition again with three Painted Ponies on the cover: "Viva Las Vegas," "Native Jewel Pony" and "Runs the Bitterroot." This incredible book was distinguished by the inclusion of images of the finalists (artists and Painted Ponies) from The Native Art of Horse Painting Competition, new Painted Ponies and updated Story Tags.

The Trail of Painted Ponies also promotes the award-winning book Children's Prayers for America. Children's Prayers for America is a touching book that shares the handwritten prayers and drawings from Children that were written after the events of September 11th. This is the book that inspired the  “Children’s Prayer Pony.” It is a wonderful accompaniment to the figurine"Children's Prayer Pony" that has been cherished by collectors since its release.
