“I believe that Native Americans were our fist true environmentalists. This design reflects their conviction that all of nature is precious. I have shown two elements that have been important in certain tribal lore – the crow and the salmon – against a backdrop of sky, land, and water. The central figure supports the birds, which in turn have supported him. Atop his head are eggs, reminders of new life. The nourishing salmon make their way upstream through the four tributaries of the horse’s legs. The images are out-of-scale reflecting the inter-connectedness of all things and the shape-shifting quality of visions. And how better to usher in this design than literally on the back of a horse – a symbol of freedom and majesty.”
