Horses are familiar to all of us, and to many of us they are a strong link to the natural world. But many of the world’s most beautiful animals are far less familiar to us. They live in remote parts of the world which we see as hostile and uninhabitable. The Arctic is one such area, but to these animals, it is home. This Pony hosts some of the creatures that are at home in the extreme cold and vast distances of the Arctic.
On the right side are animals that spend most of their lives in the forests, tundra and mountains - the Arctic wolf, the caribou, the Arctic fox, the muskox, Dall’s sheep and the tundra swan. On the front is an Arctic hare, and on the left side are animals that spend most of their lives in the sea or on the sea ice - the walrus, the harp seal, the polar bear, the humpback whale, the orca, and the ivory gull. Above them all are the breathtaking, shifting and shimmering, northern lights, or aurora.
This spectacular Pony was painted by the talented Trail of Painted Ponies artist Janee Hughes, a retired art teacher, award-winning painter, writer and book illustrator, who produces inspired artwork in her Oregon home-studio.
